Dr. Oz’s 48 hour Cleanse…. a real life overview

Standard

48 hour Cleanse

      for two

My sister and I decided to complete the 48 hour cleanse together to help rededicate our committment to healthy eating habits.  I have never truly done a fast but was inspired to buy a Breville juicer after watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead on Netflix (about a year ago) and I wanted to begin incorporating more juiced fruits and veggies into my diet.

Dr. Oz’s 48 hour cleanse is not a juice-fast, although there is a juice for lunch.  I decided to chronicle our cleanse for the rest of you to enjoy!  The one thing I couldn’t find on the internet before doing THIS particular cleanse was a review…  so here you go!

Cost

Since I live in a very rural area, some of the exotic ingredients I knew would not be available so I tailored the plan.  Below is the ingredients I bought, those I already had, and those I did not use at all.

These are the ingredients used for 2 people over a 2 day period.  This equals out to about $22 per person, or $11 per day per person, or $3.67 per meal.  Much less expensive than eating out for 2 days each meal!  Makes me feel a little better about it now.  :)  Also note, that several of these ingredients will not be used completely and could be used for a second 48 hour fast.

Results

  1. My sister and I lost a combined 10 pounds over 2 days
  2. Our digestive system truly felt detoxified
  3. Taste buds and palate now averse to all things processed
  4. New-found love for embracing healthy eating, and healthy life

Conclusion

That dinner soup really needs an overhaul and I wonder if Dr. Oz ever actually ate it.  I think we would do this again, for sure, despite that.  This detoxification may actually have something to it and I will definitely make an effort to do this at least once a month.  It is not overly expensive but it will help to get in with your local farmer’s market on this kind of eating.  I am hopefully to eventually have many of the veggies like kale in my own garden so that living and eating healthy will become a part of everyday life for me.  Good luck if you plan to do it!

    • I wish I could explain it! I made the recipe exactly as indicated and it smelled wonderful. Maybe the cabbage was just too overpowering. I could see it tasting much better with tomatoes or something like that.

  1. Thank you. My husband and I are doing the cleanse this weekend and I have been searching for real life reviews and comments. Your review answered my questions and I now know what to expect.

  2. Thank you so much for this review! A great review that helps to set realistic expectations.
I just read this after starting this cleanse this morning. Already had breakfast and wish I would have known oatmeal could be substituted for the Quinoa. Quinoa was the most awful tasting thing!

Thanks again. Looking forward to completing this cleanse this weekend.

    • Thanks for your kind remarks on the blog. I had good results from the cleanse and I hope that you do as well. I never officially read anywhere that oatmeal could be substituted, but I just was not able to eat it and be satisfied with it. Perhaps it is an acquired taste, as oatmeal was for me when I first had it a few years ago. Please come back and post your own experience and recommendations!

  3. Hi there! I have been debating on trying this cleanse but couldn’t find anything nearly has helpful as this post about how well it worked. The pros and cons are SUPER helpful! After reading this, I’m definitely going to try this cleanse. Hopefully soon! Take care!

  4. I just finished day 1. The quinoa was gross. Any suggestions on what I could replace it with? Yuck. The lunch smoothie was OK. The soup I didn’t mind at all. I added some cayenne pepper for a little kick and under my Emerson blender to blend up the veggies in the soup. It wasn’t too bad. It would have been better with a giant piece if crusty bread – but I suppose that’s not the point. LOL. The juice was yummy. I didn’t do the kale because I didn’t have a juicer but the pineapple Pom was great. I also ate the veggies all day. I wasn’t necessarily hungry, but I wasn’t full either. Oh! And I had green tea before bed. Instead of the dandelion root tea. After the veg soup – I was over consuming weeds…..good luck to anyone who tries it! It wasn’t hard…..and it’s only two days – we can do anything for two days, right? Ugh! Thanks for posting this blog too! Awesome!

    • I replaced oatmeal with the quinoa. I bought the steel cut oats and cooked on the stove. I think I still got pretty good results doing this! Thanks for the tip on the cayenne pepper. I will add this to my recipe when I try again! I am very proud of you sticking with it! I plan to do it again as soon as this pregnancy is over.

    • Good luck with the clease. I think this is a great jump start to healthy living and diet changes such as juicing, etc. Please come back and let me know how it worked for you!

  5. The soup makes enough for an army! I am done with the 2 days(thankfully) and have a huge pot of soup left. Not complaints about the drinks and lunch smoothie. I was disappointed that I didn’t get the effects I had hoped for. Guess I eat pretty healthy and I missed green vegetables that have a great effect on my digestive system. Hopefully I reaped some benefits I’m unaware of.

    • Congratulations on finishing your cleanse! What kind of effects were you looking for specifically? Just FYI, it is not intended for weight loss, per se, but this is a side benefit for some people. It would probably depend on your daily caloric intake prior.
How did you like the soup? Did you make any adjustments to it? Please share anything you like!

  6. This is the right webpage for anybody who wants to find out about this topic.
You understand a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that
I actually would want to…HaHa). You definitely put a brand new spin on a topic which
has been discussed for a long time. Great stuff, just wonderful!

  7. I just started the cleanse today. I was doing Greta until the afternoon. I had the quinoa then did the pineapple/pomegranate drink in the morning, then fruit smoothie for lunch. Around 200 I snacked on veggies but by 400 I was struggling so I made the kale drink and it was horrible! What did I do wrong? Too much Kale or mint maybe? I enjoyed the soup. It was spicy and the sauerkraut and apples were like a treat.

  8. Hi Gretchen! Congratulations on beginning your cleanse! For the green juice, make sure you juice the ingredients rather than make a smoothie. If you did that, it may help you to add a little extra pineapple or perhaps an apple if you have one around. The fruits help make the dark green veggies a little easier to go down sometimes. If that does not help you, there are lots of other juices you can experiment with online. I have used the website: http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/recipes/ This is the website by Joe Cross with “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead.” I would love to know if you made any modifications to the soup because I personally had a hard time with that one! Thanks again for stopping by.

  9. I know it’s not for weight loss but the pounds you did lose was it easy to keep off with diet and exercise? And did it help with bloating in the tummy area? Hoping to try it with my husband.

    • My weight loss was really not that signigicant, just a few pounds really. Since that happened in just 48 hours I can’t say for sure that it would be a lasting weight loss…. more likely water and/or existential loss. Despite this, the calories taken in for those 2 days are much, much lower that my normal caloric intake. To lose 1 pound per week, you must decrease your intake by 3,500 calories per week (or 500 calories a day). You can probably calculate your intake now and the intake on the cleanse to help better target your expected weight loss for the 48 hours.
I did not have any significant bloating prior to the diet, so I am not sure how this will affect you. I am not doing the cleanse currently since I am in my second trimester of pregnancy, but I am hopeful it will help me out after I deliver in September!
I hope this helps and that you and your husband have good luck with the cleanse!

  10. Thanks for the review! I’m on day 1 and about to make the soup … I’ll definitely be trying the suggestion to add some cayenne and put some of the soup through the blender. Fingers crossed that I won’t think it’s totally gross! :) I’m surprised to hear that so many people hate the quinoa! Maybe it’s an acquired taste, but I really love it. I added a bunch of cinnamon to mine in addition to the nutmeg and ginger called for in the recipe–maybe that helped?

I also wanted to add that for people who don’t have a juicer and are having trouble with the green drink, it seem like a lot of people have success making juice with a blender and either cheese cloth, a jelly straining bag or a paint straining bag. I haven’t tried it myself since I own a juicer, but I’ve seen it on a lot of different sites and it could be worth giving it a go for anyone who just has a blender.

This site demonstrates using a jelly bag: http://www.marinmamacooks.com/2012/09/how-to-make-a-mean-green-juice-without-a-juicer/

And this one demonstrates it with cheese cloth: http://www.brit.co/carrot-ginger-juice/

  11. I just started this cleanse this morning. 4 oclock now and I have a pounding headache & major stomach cramping :( I did not LOVE the quinoa for breakfast and would not choose to eat it on a regular basis but for 2 days I can manage. I can’t have any of the detox drinks though, because I’m allergic to pineapple. So, been just doing the veggies. And, I’m sort of confused as to how or why you are supposed to “dress” them. I had some plain this morning but am going to try some more now and dress them. Gonna make the soup in a little while too, and hopefully it’s not as bad as you say…lol. I do enjoy all of the ingredients that are a part of this cleanse, so…but thanks for the feedback!!

    • Hi Kristi!! Are you allergic to any other fruits? Perhaps you could substitute something in that would be just as beneficial? I certainly hope you do a good job with the soup! I think that my palate was a little glazed over when I did this cleanse. My diet is much cleaner now that I have cut out almost all processed foods. Thank you so much for checking out my review and posting! :)

  12. My main purpose for starting this cleanse today was to help unclog all the systems in my body that I am sure have been poisoned by toxins in processed food and my way way way too much consumption of refined sugar. What I want to know is how successful was the actual elimination of wastes from your body? I want all the bad stuff gone so I can start eating healthy again.

    • I’ll be honest, I do not feel it had a long term benefit for me so I moved on. I now work for a company that helps with exactly what you are looking for. I am taking the Plexus Slim and Biocleanse to lose weight and detoxify. The Biocleanse specifically oxygenates and energizes the body and helps cleanse toxins brought on by environmental stressors. The slim regulates the blood sugar and has really reduced my cravings for sweets, chips, and diet soda. I don’t even by them anymore! It has been a God send for me! You can read more about it on my website at http://www.plexusslim.com/cunninjd Feel free to message me if you have questions! I am trying to help as many people as I can!

      • Just ended the first day and I want to die! Lol I have a headache and feel tired and yucky!! I have plexus slim that I was taking but fell off the boat…I guess I’ll start taking it again… I don’t think I can handle another day of this…I’d rather just try to eat healthy…

      • You should talk with you Plexus Ambassador about the new protocol released by Dr. Miranda Jorgenson to help get over weight loss plateaus! I am on it and very excited by the initial results!

  13. I am on day 2 of this cleanse and I am not sure what to think of it. I have not felt hunger per say; however, my body is craving some type of carb. This morning I felt very weak and I am not able to concentrate at work. I feel very tired. I usually eat very healthy but with this diet, I cant wait to be done with it and eat some real food.

  14. Hello! I realize this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask.
Does operating a well-established website like yours take a massive amount work?
I’m completely new to operating a blog but I do write in my diary every day.
I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of recommendations or tips for brand
new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!

    • Thanks so much for your comment and stopping by my blog! I have had this blog for a little while now but do not consider myself a professional blogger by any means! If you want to blog get your free website from wordpress and just start. You don’t have to do it perfectly but the main thing is just to do it! Get started, figure out what your vision is, and go for it! The great thing is that if you do something that you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. :)
